The City of Johannesburg has finally settled its massive R5.25 billion electricity debt owed to Eskom, bringing a major financial headache to an end.
The Gauteng Provincial Government has welcomed the full settlement, saying the move could bring much-needed stability to the country’s economic powerhouse.
The announcement was made on Monday, 24 August 2026, following months of engagements between the City, Eskom and provincial authorities to tackle the huge outstanding bill.
