South Africa’s tourism industry has received a major boost after Brazilian carrier LATAM Airlines launched a new direct flight route between São Paulo and Cape Town.
The airline will operate three flights a week, offering travellers a faster and more convenient way to travel between Brazil and the Mother City. The new route is expected to strengthen tourism, business and trade ties between the two BRICS nations.
The launch comes as South Africa records strong growth in visitors from Brazil. In May 2026, the country welcomed 40.6% more travellers from Brazil compared with the same month last year, underlining the growing demand for travel between the two countries.
Tourism officials believe the direct flights will encourage even more Brazilian visitors to experience South Africa’s attractions, from Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain and beaches to its wine routes and wildlife destinations.
Brazil has become an increasingly important source market for South African tourism. Until now, many travellers had to connect through Johannesburg or other international hubs before reaching Cape Town, making journeys longer and less convenient.
The introduction of direct flights is expected to improve accessibility, support tourism growth and create new opportunities for business travel. It also aligns with South Africa’s broader efforts to expand international air connectivity and attract more overseas visitors.
Industry experts say improved air links are essential for growing tourism, creating jobs and strengthening economic ties between South Africa and key international markets.
