DURBAN has once again become the meeting point for South Africa’s technology and government sectors as GovTech 2026 brings together public-sector leaders, technology experts, innovators and entrepreneurs to discuss the country’s digital future.
The 20th edition of GovTech is being hosted in Durban this month, with the main conference taking place at the Durban International Convention Centre from 21 to 23 September 2026.
The event is hosted by the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) in partnership with the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.
This year’s theme is “Building Towards Digital Sovereignty: South Africa as Architect of its Digital Destiny for Citizens.”
The theme puts the spotlight on South Africa’s ability to develop, manage and secure the digital systems that increasingly underpin government services and the wider economy.
Among the issues expected to dominate discussions are digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital services, connectivity and the development of local technology capabilities.
HACKATHON ALREADY UNDERWAY
While the main GovTech programme starts next week, the event’s technology activities have already begun.
The GovTech 2026 Hackathon is taking place at the Durban ICC from 16 to 18 September, bringing together teams of South African SMMEs to develop technology-based solutions.
The hackathon is open to qualifying emerging micro enterprises, with teams required to consist of between three and five members.
The programme forms part of the broader push to place innovation and locally developed technology at the centre of South Africa’s digital transformation agenda.
3 000 DECISION-MAKERS EXPECTED
According to the official GovTech programme, the 2026 conference is expected to bring together more than 3 000 decision-makers, including government officials, ICT industry leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and development partners from across the continent.
Delegates will also have an opportunity to explore an innovation exhibition featuring technology in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and digital public infrastructure.
The conference will also feature the GovTech Challenge and Accelerator, showcasing emerging GovTech startups and SMMEs.
DURBAN BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT
For Durban, the conference provides another major international and national gathering at the ICC and places the city at the centre of discussions about the future of digital government in South Africa.
The Durban ICC has confirmed that it will host GovTech 2026 from 21 to 23 September.
The event also marks two decades of GovTech, making this year’s gathering a significant milestone for South Africa’s public-sector technology programme.
With government services increasingly moving online, the conference comes at a time when questions around digital access, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data and locally developed technology are becoming increasingly important to how citizens interact with the state.
