A dream birthday getaway has turned into an international LGBTQ+ controversy after South African influencer Austin Mzukwa and his male companion were reportedly refused entry into Zanzibar over suspicions about their relationship.
Mzukwa claimed officials stopped the pair at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and questioned them before they were sent back to South Africa.
His account has triggered an angry online debate over LGBTQ+ rights, discrimination and what protection South Africans can expect when travelling abroad.
Now popular influencer and philanthropist Mandisi Tshingana has stepped into the explosive debate.
As a member of the LGBTI community, Tshingana said he sympathises with the men and understands how humiliating and distressing the experience must have been.
But he also struck a more measured note, reminding travellers that crossing an international border means entering another country’s legal jurisdiction.
Tanzania criminalises consensual same-sex sexual activity, while Zanzibar has its own laws concerning same-sex conduct.
International travel advisories warn LGBTQ+ visitors of serious legal risks.
Tshingana stressed that respecting another country’s laws does not mean agreeing with them.
His intervention comes as the Zanzibar controversy continues to ignite fierce debate about human rights, sovereignty and the safety of LGBTQ+ travellers.
He ended with a rallying cry:
“May the good Lord bless us and give us the strength to continue to march and march until we win.”
