The Democratic Alliance (DA) has thrown its full weight behind Chris Pappas once again, naming him as its official mayoral candidate for uMngeni Municipality ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
The announcement signals the party’s determination to defend one of its biggest political success stories in KwaZulu-Natal, where Pappas has become one of the DA’s most recognisable leaders.
Launching its campaign under the slogan “#It’s Time!”, the party says it wants to build on what it describes as a remarkable turnaround in uMngeni since taking control of the municipality.
The DA claims that under Pappas’ leadership, uMngeni has become a debt-free municipality after settling its outstanding debt, while also recording four consecutive unqualified audit outcomes.
The party also credits the municipality with improving service delivery, upgrading roads and infrastructure, and strengthening financial management and accountability.
Pappas has often been held up by the DA as an example of what it believes good governance should look like, with the party hoping his track record will convince voters to give it another mandate.
The campaign will now focus on the message “Keep uMngeni Working for All,” with the DA arguing that stability and accountable leadership remain key to maintaining progress in the municipality.
As election campaigning gathers momentum, Pappas is expected to face fierce competition from rival political parties, making uMngeni one of the closely watched municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal.
The DA hopes that the achievements it attributes to Pappas’ administration will be enough to keep the municipality in its hands when voters head to the polls.
