South Africa’s biggest retail bank is entering a new era after shareholders voted in favour of changing the company’s corporate name from Capitec Bank Holdings Limited to simply Capitec Limited.
The decision was approved through a special resolution at the bank’s Annual General Meeting, with shareholders backing the move as part of a broader effort to simplify the group’s corporate structure and strengthen its brand identity.
The company has already secured approval from the JSE and the Prudential Authority, although the change will only take effect once it is formally registered by the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).
The JSE share code CPI, the abbreviated trading name Capitec, and the ISIN number will remain unchanged. The bank will also keep its existing listing, shareholder register, and trading history.
The name change removes the “Bank Holdings” wording that has been part of the group’s listed identity for years, signalling a shift toward a cleaner and more recognisable corporate brand.
The operating banking subsidiary will continue to trade as Capitec Bank Limited, meaning customers will still bank with Capitec as usual.
The move comes at a time when Capitec is enjoying strong momentum in the South African banking sector, with more than 24 million clients and a growing presence in digital banking, insurance, business banking, and mobile services.
Analysts say the simplified corporate name reflects the reality that Capitec has evolved beyond a traditional banking holding company into a broader financial services group.
Capitec is expected to publish a further SENS announcement confirming the implementation timetable once all regulatory processes have been completed.
