A Durban business that started as a car wash in Chesterville is expanding to the beachfront after Mojo’s Investment CC was named the successful bidder to operate a municipal property in South Beach.
The eThekwini Municipality has awarded the business a lease for the property at 17 Erskine Terrace for nine years and 11 months.
The award follows a competitive bidding process launched in November 2023. The announcement was delayed by an appeal from an unsuccessful bidder, which was dismissed by an independent Appeal Authority.
Subsequent court proceedings were withdrawn, allowing the municipality to proceed with the lease.
FROM CAR WASH TO BEACHFRONT
Mojo’s has been operating for 20 years, growing from a car-wash business in Chesterville into Mojo’s Carwash & Shisanyama, a food and entertainment destination.
The business later expanded to Glenwood with the establishment of Mojo’s on Davenport.
Its move to South Beach marks another stage in its expansion, taking the brand into one of Durban’s established tourism and leisure precincts.
The municipality says the new operation will add to the range of food, hospitality and entertainment offerings available along the Golden Mile.
BEACHFRONT INVESTMENT PLANS
The lease forms part of eThekwini Municipality’s broader efforts to attract private investment and increase economic activity along the beachfront.
Other projects include a 50-year lease with Southern Sun for the Elangeni and Maharani hotels, as well as the planned redevelopment of 137 Lower Marine Parade, where construction is expected to begin in January 2027.
The municipality says these developments are intended to support tourism, create employment opportunities and make better use of municipal properties while retaining public ownership.
The city will work with Mojo’s to implement the lease and prepare the site for operations.
Details about the beachfront concept, investment value, expected employment opportunities and opening date have yet to be announced.
