Mac G has opened up about an earlier chapter of his radio career, claiming that he was overlooked for major opportunities at YFM despite his strong performance on air because Sizwe Dhlomo was considered more attractive.
Speaking during a conversation about the role that appearance can play in the entertainment industry, Mac G reflected on his days at YFM and admitted that he felt his looks worked against him.
According to Mac G, he was already proving himself as a broadcaster, but believed he was being passed over for bigger shows because Dhlomo had the image that radio bosses were looking for.
“I always got overlooked because Sizwe was way prettier than me,” Mac G said.
The broadcaster said the experience did not stop him from pushing forward. Instead, he continued focusing on radio and building his reputation through his work.
Mac G also recalled a period when his image was far from polished, joking that he dressed “like a hobo” while concentrating on his broadcasting career.
Things became even more interesting when someone advised him to improve his public relations.
Mac G said a PR professional told him that although his radio work was strong, his public profile was poor and he needed a publicity stunt to get his name into newspapers.
One suggestion was particularly bold: he should date someone famous.
Mac G said he rejected the idea, explaining that he would not enter a fake relationship simply to generate publicity.
He even joked about the possibility of dating , saying he would not have minded if the relationship were genuine.
His story comes as Mac G was discussing the uncomfortable reality of appearance, money and image in the entertainment industry.
For him, the lesson appears to be that looks may open certain doors, but talent and consistency are ultimately what keep a broadcaster in the game.
